The yellow room: how Van Gogh shaped our studio
Share
If you have looked at our product photos this season, you will have noticed the yellow room: tilted walls, a deep ochre carpet, a single yellow chair. It is not a backdrop we picked from a catalogue. We built it ourselves in the studio beneath our store in Arnhem, and it comes from one painting.
A new canvas every season
Every season we start again with an empty studio. For Spring Summer 2026 our world was Claude Monet, with his home and gardens in Giverny: pink walls, green shutters and flowers. In August we cleared that canvas to make room for a new story. Inspiration for us often begins far beyond clothing, in art and in the worlds artists created through colour, light and texture.
Finding the colour
Before anyone knew who the artist would be, we were already mixing paint, adjusting and painting, searching for the tones that would set the atmosphere. Every colour was chosen with intention. Then came the reveal: Vincent van Gogh.

The Bedroom
Our starting point was one of his most recognisable paintings, The Bedroom, which we went to see at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. What fascinates us is that the room is far from perfect. The perspective shifts, lines seem to run in different directions and the proportions feel slightly off. Van Gogh was not painting a realistic interior, but a room seen through his own eyes.
That imperfection is exactly what we wanted. So the studio has walls set at an angle, strong colour and an almost flattened perspective, with a shaggy ochre carpet, an empty frame on the wall and a yellow rush chair. Not a reproduction, but our own interpretation of his room.

In search of Vincent
We wanted to come closer than his paintings alone. We travelled to Auvers-sur-Oise, walked through the wheatfields he painted and visited Auberge Ravoux, where Vincent spent the final 70 days of his life. Upstairs is Room 5, a small, barely furnished attic room. In those 70 days he made 74 paintings. Closer to home, we were invited to the opening of Van Gogh, All Our Paintings at the Kröller-Müller Museum, where all 88 of the museum's Van Gogh paintings are shown together for the first time since 1984.
We brought those impressions home to Arnhem, where they became part of the colours, textures and styling of our Fall Winter collection.

Why we photograph this way
A room like this lets us show complete looks instead of single pieces on a white background: how a coat falls, how colours and textures sit together, how something familiar can feel different. Art, clothing and creativity in one frame. That is the world we build at Neighbourhood, and the yellow room is where it comes together this season.
